Presse: Evita a reçu des critiques mitigées de critiques de cinéma. Il recueille actuellement une cote de 64 % sur Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic a décerné au film une note de 45/100 (avec "des critiques mixtes ou moyennes") basée sur 23 critiques. Roger Ebert donna au film 3,5 étoiles (sur 4), louant le travail du réalisateur Parker et des stars Madonna et Banderas. Le critique Zach Conner a commenté: «C'est un soulagement de dire qu’Evita est un film très beau. Madonna une fois de plus comble nos attentes. Elle est poignante quand elle joue la lassitude et l’apathie d’Evita et a bien plus que la simple qualité d’une star. Qu’on l’aime ou la déteste, Madonna-Eva est un réel pôle d'attraction pour tous les yeux.»[16] Richard Corliss, du Times, a écrit : «Mais cet Evita n'est pas juste un film long et complexe. Commentaire: The film's concept was based on a stage production directed by Richard Eyre for the Royal National Theatre, which also starred McKellen. The production was adapted for the screen by McKellen and directed by Richard Loncraine.
The film is notable for its unconventional use of famous British landmarks, often using special effects to move them to new locations. The transformed landmarks used include the following:
St Pancras railway station is relocated to Westminster and becomes King Edward's seat of government.
Battersea Power Station is relocated to the coast of Kent and is portrayed as a bombed-out military base.
Bankside Power Station, rather than the actual Tower of London, is the prison where Clarence is imprisoned. At the time of filming, the station was partially derelict, long before its current partial use as Tate Modern.
Brighton Pavilion is relocated to a coastal clifftop as King Edward's country retreat.
Senate House of the University of London is Richard's seat of government and is used for interior and exterior scenes.[2] The famous art deco facade and clock of Shell Mex House is also featured in exterior shots.
The visually rich production features various symbols, uniforms, weapons, and vehicles that draw openly from the aesthetic of the Third Reich as depicted in Nazi propaganda (especially Triumph of the Will) and war films. At the same time, obvious care is put into diluting and mixing the Nazi references with recognizable British and American uniform styles, props, and visual motifs. The resulting military uniforms, for instance, range from completely Allied in cases of positive characters to almost completely SS in the case of Richard's entourage. Another example of this balanced approach to production design is the choice of tanks for battle scenes between Richmond's and Richard's armies: both use Soviet tanks (T-55s and T-34s respectively), mixed with German, American, and British World War II-era vehicles. To convey the out-of-place nature of the common-born Queen Elizabeth, she is reconfigured as an American socialite similar to Wallis Simpson, and she and her brother are treated with marked disapproval by members of the Court.
Perhaps the play's most famous line—"A horse! A horse! My kingdom for a horse!"—was re-contextualized by the more recent setting; during the climactic battle, Richard's jeep becomes stuck, hung up on a pile of debris, and his lament is cast as a plea for a mode of transport with legs rather than wheels.
The film enlarges the role of the Duchess of York considerably by combining her character with that of Queen Margaret, as compared with Laurence Olivier's 1955 film version of the play, in which the Duchess hardly appeared at all and Queen Margaret was completely eliminated. The roles of Rivers, Grey, Vaughan, and Dorset are combined into Rivers. The death scenes are shown rather than implied as in the play, and changed to suit the time (Hastings is hanged rather than beheaded) and historical accuracy (Clarence dies by having his throat cut in a bathtub, rather than being drowned in a wine barrel). Lord Rivers—who usually dies offstage (or, in the case of Olivier's film, offscreen)—is impaled by the device of a sharp spike spurting up from the bottom of his mattress while he lies in bed during sex with a woman in a hotel room. Each character's pre-death monologue is also removed, except that of Clarence and Buckingham. (plus)

Commentaire: Après ce film, Fred Astaire s'est effectivement retiré des comédies musicales, préférant se concentrer sur des rôles non musicaux, bien qu'il produise plusieurs émissions spéciales musicales pour la télévision au cours des prochaines années. Il ne ferait pas une autre comédie musicale avant Finian's Rainbow.
Les paroles originales de Cole Porter ont été légèrement tronquées pour le film. Par exemple, Fred Astaire chante une phrase dans Stereophonic Sound sur le fait que le public ne veut pas voir un baiser «à moins que ses lèvres ne soient écarlates/et que sa bouche mesure cinq pieds de large». Dans le musical original de Broadway, les paroles étaient "à moins que ses lèvres ne soient écarlates/et que sa poitrine mesure cinq pieds de large".
Ce fut le dernier film officiellement crédité comme réalisé par Rouben Mamoulian. Bien qu'il ait travaillé sans être crédité au générique sur Porgy et Bess et Cléopâtre, et qu'il ait été envisagé pour plusieurs autres productions cinématographiques, la majeure partie du reste de sa carrière a consisté à mettre en scène des pièces de théâtre à Broadway.
Ce film a été un flop majeur au box-office, coûtant 2,5 millions de dollars et perdant 1,4 million de dollars. (plus)

MacDonald et Eddy chantent sans relâche du début à la fin, ressemblant respectivement à une valise en cuir brut et à un cheval à bascule. Sari ne vieillit jamais. 'Zigeuner' est un numéro de production déchirant avec des millions de danseurs hongrois. Miss M choisit de chanter "Ladies of the Town" et les deux chansons de Manon. Elle danse aussi un Can-Can! À un moment donné dans le Vieux Vienne, elle offre un cocktail à Carl! C'est la merde la plus vulgaire, la plus ennuyeuse et la plus vile que j'aie jamais vue de ma vie. C'est en Technicolor et les cheveux de Miss M deviennent de plus en plus rouges jusqu'à ce que vous ayez envie de crier. Oh là là, argent ou pas, j'aurais aimé qu'on interdise ce film.»
En 1951, il a dit à Daily Express: «Je considérais le succès de Bitter Sweet comme une rente pour ma vieillesse. Après le film épouvantable de la MGM, il n'y aura plus jamais de revival sur scène.» (plus)

Presse: "Considering that it was adapted from a Broadway musical by Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart and George Abbott, The Boys From Syracuse must rank as a disappointment, though it manages to remain entertaining throughout its surprisingly brief 74-minute running time. Like its theatrical predecessor, the film was inspired by Shakespeare's The Comedy Of Errors ("After a play by William Shakespeare long, long after" reads the opening title). In ancient Ephesus, young tyrant Antipholus (Allan Jones) sentences elderly merchant Aegeon (Samuel S. Hinds) to death unless the latter can come up with a handsome ransom. What Antipholus doesn't know is that Aegeon is his own father; he also doesn't know that he has a twin brother, also named Antipholus (and also played by Allan Jones) who has just arrived from Syracuse in search of dear old daddy. Further complicating matters is that Antipholus of Ephesus and Antipholus of Syracuse both have slaves named Dromio (Joe Penner)-likewise identical twins! The mistaken-identity angle is played to the hilt, with A. of E.'s wife Adriana (Irene Hervey), A. of S.'s girlfirend Phyllis (Rosemary Lane), and Dromio of Ephesus' main squeeze Luce (Martha Raye) ending up just as confused as everyone else. Only four of the original Rodgers & Hart songs were retained-"This Can't Be Love", "Falling In Love With Love", "Sing For Your Supper", and "Oh, Diogenes"-while two new ones were written for the film. Most of the best jokes are based on anachronisms, with Dromio the slave organizing a labor union (complete with placards), a cheering section at an execution shouting "Give him the ax", and a parchment newspaper bearing such headlines as "Ephesus Blitzkriegs Syracuse". Originally purchased by Universal as a vehicle for the Ritz Brothers, The Boys from Syracuse isn't any great shakes, but it would certainly be well worth seeing again (last telecast in the 1970s, it seems to have fallen off the face of the earth in recent years!)" Commentaire: En 1930, la MGM a engagé Wodehouse pour adapter Rosalie au cinéma pour le réalisateur Marion Davies, mais le projet est finalement abandonné, en partie à cause de l’intérêt déclinant pour les musicals, mais aussi peut-être à cause de l’indifférence de Davies pour l’œuvre. En 1936, après que le retour des films musicaux à la mode, le studio a de nouveau souscrit aux services de Wodehouse pour préparer une adaptation cinématographique. Le premier auteur, William McGuire, maintenant producteur du film, finira par réécrire lui-même le scénario. La MGM a commandé une nouvelle partition à Cole Porter, ce qui semble totalement inexplicable: mettre des chansons de Gershwin à la poubelle!

Commentaire: Le film devait initialement sortir aux États-Unis à la fin de 1930, mais, en cette période de terribe crise économique, a été abandonné en raison de l'apathie du public envers les musicals.
Malgré une attente de plusieurs mois, le public s'est montré obstiné et les Warner Bros. ont sorti le film à contrecœur en février 1931 après avoir supprimé toute la musique. En dehors des Etats-Unis, le film est sorti complet, avec toutes les chansons en 1931.
Seule une copie en noir et blanc de la version américaine découpée publiée en 1931 aux États-Unis semble avoir survécu. Le film complet est sorti intact dans des pays autres que les États-Unis où aucune réaction contre les comédies musicales ne s'est jamais produite. Au milieu des années ‘50, le George Eastman Museum a acquis de la MGM un tirage 16 mm pour sa collection. En 2018, le Moving Image Department a reçu une subvention de la Fondation Louis B. Mayer pour restaurer le film. Mais pour que cette restauration soit la meilleure, des sources en meilleur état étaient nécessaires. Warner Bros. a prêté leur Fine Grain Master 35 mm. Un master à grain fin est un positif à faible contraste utilisé pour imprimer des négatifs dupliqués. Ce Fine Grain Master a été tiré du négatif original de 1925, qui s'est depuis décomposé. Ce film est désormais disponible en 35 mm et en DCP. (plus)
